PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college readiness elective that helps close the opportunity gaps for students in the academic middle that want to go to college and can utilize additional academic support.  Under the general supervision of the principal and AVID coordinator and the immediate supervision of the AVID elective teacher, AVID Tutors assist identified students in academic subjects in order to develop habits of mind and higher standards of academic achievement among students which will increase postsecondary educational options upon high school graduation. AVID Tutors are distinguished from other Tutors and Instructional Aides/Assistants in that AVID Tutors are trained in the use of AVID strategies to enhance academic performance of targeted high school students and serve as role models and mentors AVID prepares our students by teaching them college readiness skills. Students are enrolled in advanced courses and given academic support through tutors.

           

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

- Must be a current or former college student with a minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
- Must have a strong Math and English background, evidenced by college transcript

- Interest in scaffolding student learning using questioning and collaboration techniques

- Highly organized with attention to detail

- Excellent writing skills

- Strong analytical and problem solving skills

- Ability to communicate constructively and effectively

- Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with students and staff

 

OTHER INFORMATION:

-Work Type: Part-time (6-15 hours per week).

-Applicants must agree to a criminal history check prior to beginning work.

-High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education agency

 

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

  1. Become familiar with the AVID 10-Step tutorial Process
  2. Participate in all required trainings, professional development sessions, and meetings.
  3. Tutor students in small study groups assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.
  4. Determine from student notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or retaught.
  5. Facilitate student learning in a challenging, yet supportive, tutoring environment.
  6. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
  7. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
  8. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students
  9. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
  10. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
  11. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
