PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned bus route.  Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated location.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (class B) with school bus and passenger endorsement

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 21 years of age

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedure

Ability to manage student behavior

Ability to operate bus

Acceptable driving record according to Texas Education Agency standards

               

Experience:

Experience as a certified school bus driver preferred

 

 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

 

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

 

  1. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing bus.

 

  1. Maintain discipline on school buses and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.

 

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

 

  1. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after operation and prepare work orders for needed repairs.

 

  1. Perform thorough bus maintenance inspection and complete related paperwork as scheduled by department.

 

  1. Communicate with school personnel and parents about student behavior while on the bus.

 

  1. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

 

  1. Operate two-way radio equipment with transportation office.

 

  1. Follow proper procedures for reporting all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and complete required reports.

 

  1. Drive bus for extracurricular activities as needed.

 

  1. Regular attendance; must be willing and able to report to work at the designated work site on a regular daily basis according to established work schedule.

 

  1. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment; such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector          

 

  1. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.

 

  1. Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.

 

  1. Serve as role model for students.

 

  1. Follow district policy concerning uniforms.

 

  1. Comply with all state, district, and departmental regulations, policies and procedures.

 

  1. Complete all staff development/training requirements.

 

  1. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Mental Demands:

Maintain emotional control, ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain effective control over students.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions.  Ability to operate motor vehicle/bus.  Moderate lifting (over 40 lbs.), bending, stooping, climbing, and turning of the head and shoulders.  Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Subject to bus driving certification requirements including random alcohol and drug testing.
