PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Provide students with appropriate art learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop motor skills.  Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

           

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned

Certification in the Visual Arts (Preferred)

ESL Certification required within six months of employment.

 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of subjects assigned

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

At least one year of student teaching or approved internship

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

  1. Plan and implement instruction to ensure that all students master the broad categories of the visual and performing arts:
  • Developing aesthetic awareness;
  • Creating visual art;
  • Demonstrating critical, analytical, judgmental, and evaluative skills;
  • Understanding the historical, social, and cultural context of artistic accomplishments; and
  • Using skills to design space, sound, and events.

 

  1. Develop and implement plans for the art curriculum and show written evidence of preparation as required and meets the needs of students.

 

  1. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.

 

  1. Prepare lessons that place emphasis on understanding the processes and cultural context of the arts as well as on the traditional emphasis of creating visual products..

 

  1. Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

 

  1. Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.

 

  1. Communicate and promote expectations for high level performance from students and recognize excellence in achievement.

 

  1. Develop instructional activities, which incorporate appropriate student learning styles to meet student needs.

 

  1. Provide a variety of learning experiences that allow students to demonstrate skills and concepts through displays, portfolios, and a variety of communication mediums, including electronic media presentations.

 

  1. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans.

 

  1. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community in a positive manner.

 

  1. Collaborate with campus teams, the SMCISD Visual Arts team, and vertical alignment teams.

 

  1. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, and/or volunteers.

 

  1. Use technologies in the teaching/learning process as available and appropriate.

 

  1. Utilize technology to present content to the class.

 

  1. Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal testing and provide progress and interim reports as needed and required.

 

  1. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, i.e. art clubs.

 

  1. Present for students a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.

 

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, emotional, and artistic development of students.

 

  1. Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and the IEP through the implementation of a proactive and positive classroom management plan.

 

  1. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

  1. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as requested.

 

  1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.

 

  1. Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

 

  1. Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

 

  1. Participate in campus and district staff development program.

 

  1. Maintain and improve professional competence through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences (such as Texas Art Educators Association or CEDFA Fine Arts Summit) and/or advanced courses at institutes of higher learning.

 

  1. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.

 

  1. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and inspires students to live healthy, active lifestyles.

 

  1. Keeps informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

 

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

 

  1. Prepare and submit student artwork to local exhibits such as Youth Art Month and to other sponsored exhibits and contests, including but not limited to PTA Reflections, TASB/TASA exhibit and State Youth Art Month exhibits..

 

  1. Follow district and campus policy in assignment of meaningful homework, which supports curriculum goals and objectives.

 

  1. Follow district and/or campus grading policy in the assignment of grades.

 

  1. Attend and participate in faculty meetings, department meetings, and committee meetings as required.

 

  1. Report to work at the designated site on a regular daily basis according to the established work schedule.

 

  1. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Principal and/or Assistant Principal.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Supervise assigned instructional assistants, aides, and/or classroom volunteers.  Assist in the supervision of assigned student teachers.

Mental Demands:

Ability to communicate (verbal and written); ability to instruct; ability to interpret policy and procedures; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

           

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Work inside and outside; prolonged standing and walking; lifting and carrying; in-district travel as assigned and occasional out-of-district travel.  Be physically fit and active.
