DEPT./CAMPUS: SMCISD Fine Arts:Band/San Marcos High School

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:  The Color Guard Technical Assistant will assist the SMHS Color Guard Director with their instructional duties in regards to both the Rattler Marching Band and the Winter Guard Program in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma

 

Experience:

  • A background in high school marching, band color guard performance, and winter guard performance.
  • A background in college marching band color guard performance, college winter guard performance.
  • Experience in drum corps color guard performance, or winter guard performance preferred.
  • Experience in teaching high school marching band color guard or winter guard preferred.
  • Experience in teaching college marching band color guard, college winter guard, drum corps color guard, or winter guard preferred.
  • Experience in the various sub groups of the guard unit (e.g. flags, rifles, sabres, dance, etc.).  
  • Experience in composing and choreographing routines for the various color guard units. 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Capacity to design color guard programs that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program. 
  • Ability to evaluate student performance and assist in improving individual and group skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to choreograph, arrange, and implement color guard routine(s), both as an integrated part of the marching band (Field Show, Parade Routine, Stand Dances), and as an independent unit (Winter Guard). 

 

Job Description:

  • Ensure communication with the Band Director and the other staff members to develop a visual program, including flag, uniform, and prop design.
  • Coordinate the color guard rehearsal schedule with the full Marching Band. 
  • Attend all rehearsals and performances, instruct members in fundamental and advanced color guard techniques (i.e., dance, flag, and weapon).  
  • Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with Marching Band Director. 
  • Schedule and conduct extra rehearsals for the unit, in addition to the scheduled marching band rehearsals as needed. 
  • Maintain high expectations for the level of performance from color guard members during the warm-ups and give attention to individual members. 
  • Make sure the color guard is prepared/equipped for rehearsals and performances. 
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other staff. 
  • Schedule competition events as the unit transitions its status from an attachment of the marching band to an independent competition entity (e.g., “Winter Guard”) during the winter season.  
  • Establish communication with parents of color guard students and organize their efforts in support of the unit. 
  • Other related duties, as assigned, to assist the Band Director in preparing students for competitions and public appearances, including parades and reviews.
  • Assist the Color Guard Director in developing a visual program including flag, sabre, rifle, choreography, drill and uniform design.
  • Assist the Color Guard Director in cleaning visual aspects of the Marching Show involving the Color Guard.
  • Assist the Color Guard Director with choreographing, staging and overall design of the Winter Guard Competition Show.
  • Assist the Color Guard Director with implementing their winter guard rehearsal plans and instruction involving the flags, sabre, rifle, choreography, staging, show design, prop design and costuming.
  • Assist the Color Guard Director with Winter Guard Contest logistics during each contest involving moving the Rattler Color Guard between warm-up zones, staging and implementing each itinerary.
  • Attend all fall marching band rehearsals and spring winter guard rehearsals.
  • Attend all fall marching band performances and contests.
  • Attend all spring winter guard contests.

 

NOTE: Applicant must have a satisfactory outcome of the fingerprinting background check.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Color guard visual devices (flags, sabres, rifles, staging tools, etc.)
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, etc..
  • Motion: Repetitive hand/arm motions, frequent hand gripping, reaching, bending, etc.
  • Lifting: Occasional light to medium lifting and carrying (less than 40 pounds).
  • Environment: Frequent outdoor exposure, prolonged travel.
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; Work with frequent interruptions, ability to communicate; ability to instruct
