JOB TITLE:  Student Attendance Case Manager - Grant funded position

REPORTS TO:  Office of Teaching, Learning & Assessment

DEPT./CAMPUS:  Department of Teaching, Learning & Assessment, District-Wide

Primary Purpose: 

Position is responsible for providing support services to schools in the investigation and counseling of students with regular patterns of school non-attendance. Position assesses situations at the levels of student, family, and community to investigate root causes of non-attendance. Position coordinates case management activities in performing social services work to include obtaining information, analyzing student needs, planning and implementing service plans, counseling students, maintaining communication with student’s families and service providers for medical, social, financial, educational, housing, and/or related service needs.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education, social sciences, or related field of study
  • One (1) year of case management, counseling, juvenile service work or closely related experience
  • Valid Texas driver’s license

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Skill with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer, computation, and file maintenance skills
  • Knowledge of school district organization, operations, and administrative policies
  • Knowledge and understanding of attendance laws/regulations, intervention/prevention strategies, and referral sources
  • Skill with interpreting/communicating compulsory attendance law and provide support services for students and their families
  • Bilingual preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

 

  1. Gather and review attendance data to identify students who are excessively truant.
  2. Investigate cases referred because of unexcused absences from school.
  3. Assess students with attendance problems and make home visits and telephone contacts to investigate possible contributing factors.
  4. Keep written reports of all home visits and contacts.
  5. Collaborate with school staff to develop interventions for students who are truant and develop individualized intervention plans to improve attendance.
  6. Make referrals to other professional staff members or community agencies as needed.
  7. Serve as a liaison between assigned schools and such agencies as social services, court services, and the police department regarding student truancy.
  8. Provide families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating the importance of school attendance.
  9. Counsel with students and parents concerning the district’s, the parent’s, and the student’s responsibility for school attendance.
  10. Interact sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences.
  11. Act as a resource to administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and health services personnel at assigned schools regarding attendance programs, interpretation of attendance policies/laws, and recordkeeping requirements.
  12. Assist with implementing truancy prevention programs for assigned schools and recommend strategies to support and improve regular school attendance (e.g. incentives, peer groups, recognitions).
  13. Maintain contact and act as liaison to local law enforcement agencies and courts in the area of student truancy.
  14. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including records of all cases investigated and reports required by the commissioner of education and/or district.
  15. Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the area of student attendance.
  16. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  17. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  18. Maintain confidentiality.
  19. Keep informed of and comply with state and district policies and regulations concerning primary job functions.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Qualifications:

Computers (PC and Laptop), telephone, printer, copier, calculator, and facsimile

 

Mental Demands:

Interpret policy; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress, work after hours, as needed.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent in-district and occasional out-of-district travel in personal vehicle; light lifting and moderate keyboarding.

 

School district employees may be required to work from home and use their personal electronic devices. 

 

This position is support with ESSER III Grant funds.  The position must adhere the ESSER III Grant program funding source requirements.  It is important to understand that if the special allotment program fund(s) end, the position could end as well.
