PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

To operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated locations.  Plan and coordinate assignments and schedules of bus drivers, routes, and vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation services.   To be responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned bus routes.  Implement planned routes and bus services between parents, schools, field trips, non-district activities and transportation department.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

            Minimum Education/Experience:

High School Diploma or GED

Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (Texas) with school bus and passenger endorsement preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 21 years of age or older

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Acceptable driving record according to Texas Education Agency standards

Personal Computer skills required

 

Experience:

Experience in Microsoft Office suites, Transfinder Pro routing software preferred

           

MAJOR RESPONISIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

  1. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated locations

 

  1. Provide safe, quality, courteous, and customer focused pupil transportation for the district.

 

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

 

  1. Provides replacement school buses during field trip breakdowns, both local and out-of-district locations.

 

  1. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing the bus.

 

  1. Maintain a consistent level of discipline on school buses and report student discipline problems to the Associate Director or his designee.

 

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

 

  1. Responsible for dispatching regular route, door-to-door Pre-K, Special Populations, Charter Services, and Alternative Programs student transportation both to and from the student’s home and school (as assigned).

 

  1. Maintain extensive working knowledge of traffic laws, street repairs/closures/detours to ensure effective day-to-day route dispatching.

 

  1. Assist route planner with communicating route changes to students, parents,  campus administrators, and drivers as quickly and effectively as possible (as assigned).

 

  1. Maintain manual and computerized records and files related to the transportation program.

 

  1. Answer questions from parents of students regarding transportation issues (hazardous condition areas, 2-mile zone, and student zoning, pick-up and drop-off, and student discipline management) and record actions (as assigned).

 

  1. Respond/address student discipline, parental concerns, and staff inquiries effectively and efficiently.

 

  1. Assist route planner in maintaining data for bus routes noting daily movement of students, address changes, daily attendance, and time changes in pick-up or drop-off times at student’s residence to facilitate timely notification to drivers of the changes.

 

  1. Dispatch drivers and vehicles and communicate with them using a telephone and two-way radio under the specific guidelines and policies of the district and transportation department.

 

  1. Assist or handle assignments of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and substitutes for daily shifts.

 

  1. Document driver absences, schedule substitute driver or modify route accordingly.

 

  1. Handle routine details and phone inquiries not requiring immediate attention of supervisor(s) for the purpose of efficient department operations.

 

  1. Follow proper procedures for reporting all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and complete required reports.

 

  1. Maintain daily tabulations of trip mileage, duration of trip, student rider ship for each charter trip in preparation of billing expenses to appropriate account code numbers (via Transfinder) (as assigned).

 

  1. Regular attendance; must be willing and able to report to work at designated site on a regular daily basis according to established work schedule.

 

  1. Serve as a role model for students and transportation staff.

 

  1. Comply with all state, district, and departmental regulations.

 

  1. Comply with district policies and procedures.

 

  1. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Supervisory responsibilities:

 

Monitor the work of and issue work assignments or job tasks to regular and substitute drivers (as assigned).

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

 

Operates a school bus, van, or car; operates fuel pumps, bus wash equipment, two-way radio, and computer, office supplies and equipment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to maintain effective control over students

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Continual sitting, reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions.  Moderate lifting (over 40 lbs.), bending, stooping, climbing, and turning of the head and shoulders.  Ability to operate a motor vehicle/school bus.  Ability to work nights and weekends are required. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.  Subject to Texas State bus driving certification requirements and random drug and alcohol testing.
