PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a system that targets potential college students who require support. AVID prepares these students by teaching them college readiness skills. Students are enrolled in advanced courses and given academic support through tutors.

 

 

Under direct supervision of the AVID coordinator/teacher, part-time tutors will perform the following tasks:


1. Determine from student notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be taught or
retaught..

 

2. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.

 

3. Become familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.

 

4. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.

 

5. Conduct tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics; therefore, a strong math
background is mandatory.

 

6. Conduct mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and

other aspects of college preparation.

 

7. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to
follow.

 

8. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming,
clustering, revision, and editing..

 

9. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding
student progress and areas of concern.

 

Qualifications:
- Must be a college student with at minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
- Must have a strong math and English background, evidenced by college transcript

 

 

 SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

- Interest in scaffolding student learning using questioning and collaboration techniques

- Highly organized with attention to detail

- Excellent writing skills

- Strong analytical and problem solving skills

- Ability to communicate constructively and effectively

- Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with students and staff

 

OTHER INFORMATION:

-Work Type: Part-time (6-15 hours per week). 

-Applicants must agree to a criminal history check prior to beginning work.

-High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education agency
