JOB TITLE:  Childcare Assistant
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
REPORTS TO: School Age Pregnant and Parenting Program Coordinator

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To operate a licensed daycare center classroom (0-3 yrs.). Provide a safe, nurturing, stimulating, and positive learning environment. Provide developmentally age-appropriate activities. To foster independence and self-worth in the children.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Minimum of 48 hours of college credit

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work well with and to recognize and respect uniqueness and potential of all children, their families and cultures
Knowledge of child development
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills

Experience:
Minimum of 6 months experience in a state licensed daycare center with 0-3 year old children required or equivalent experience in education.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 
1. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

2. Keep the director informed of any special needs or problems of individual students or children using the Child Development Center.

3. Maintain a neat and orderly classroom.

4. Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

5. Participate in staff development training programs (24 hrs.-per year required), faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.

6. Maintain positive interaction with other staff, students, and parents.

7. Nurture the emotional, social, physical and intellectual growth of the children, teen parents, high school student workers, college interns, and Special Education students placed for training at the Child Development Center.

8. Abide by policies and procedures of the center outlined in the SMCISD Child Development Center Staff Handbook, TDHS, NAEYC Accreditation, and 4 Star CCMS Certification.

9. Implement developmentally appropriate written lesson plans.

10. Monitor children’s progress on a regular basis. Complete all children and family assessments including follow up on areas of concerns.

11. Communicate with parents verbally on a regular basis.

12. Document appropriate information: attendance, injury, medications, diapers, bottles, food, naps, suspected abuse or neglect, student worker progress, special education students’ progress.

13. Conduct parent conferences twice a year. Complete home visits twice a year.

14. Participate in staff training at least 24 hours a year.

15. Assist with personal hygiene of children, including changing diapers, toilet training, soiled clothing, ill or injured child as needed.

16. Protect the health and safety of the children.

17. Maintain positive, cooperative attitude and understand the need to be flexible in the child care field.

18. Perform opening/closing duties in the child development center including bus duty, playground duty, and parking lot monitoring.

19. Provide tee parents with informal parenting, academic, social guidance.

20. Monitor teen parents’ academic success and develop plans when needed.

21. Supervise student workers, interview, provide training, evaluate, monitor, and provide feedback to the appropriate vocational programs.

22. Supervise and support special education students based in the Child Development Center as a work base learning site.

23. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by director, supervisor, or student workers.

Mental Demands:
Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Moderate standing, stooping, bending, lifting and carrying up to 35 lb.; inside and outside work; good vision acuity, speech, and hearing; biological exposure to communicable diseases, viruses, bacteria.
