JOB TITLE: Mechanic
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Transportation

DEPT./SCHOOL: Maintenance/Transportation Center

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Maintain school vehicles and equipment and serve as substitute bus driver.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (class B) with school bus and passenger endorsement
Ability to certify as a bus driver

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
Acceptable driving record
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to operate bus

EXPERIENCE:
Three years mechanical experience preferred
Two years welding experience preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Support the educational goals of the district.
2. If needed, drive a school bus as prescribed by the State of Texas, Texas Education Agency or the School Board.
3. Maintain school buses and all other district-owned vehicles and equipment in operable and safe condition.
4. Follow district student management plan.
5. Submit all required reports in a timely manner.
6. Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
7. Assist in purchasing parts for vehicles and equipment for Transportation Department.
8. Maintain computerized inventory of parts and supplies for Transportation Department.
9. Follow district policy concerning uniforms.
10. Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
11. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to established safety procedures.
12. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
13. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
14. Operate buses and vehicles as needed, including driving buses into shop area for work.
15. Record use of gas and mileage for buses daily.
16. Comply with all state, district, and departmental polices and procedures.
17. Perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Mental Demands:
Concentration, verbal and written communication skills, reasoning skills, reading, instructing, emotional control in stressful situations

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Driving, walking, lifting (50 lbs. and under). Inside and outside work; temperature extremes; humidity extremes; noise; slippery surfaces; sunlight exposure; works with hands in water and cleaning products; works under and around vehicles; wears safety eyewear; works around moving objects and vehicles. Subject to bus driving certification requirements including random alcohol and drug testing.
