JOB TITLE: Speech Therapist/Pathologist
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Special Education
DEPT. /SCHOOL: Campus Assigned

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Plan and provide direct therapy to students with speech, voice, or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students’ ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Master’s Degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university
Valid Texas license as a speech language pathologist granted by the Texas Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Skill in the use of tests and measurements for assessing speech-language disorders
Knowledge of evaluation, habilitation and rehabilitation of speech, language, and hearing disorders
Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Consultation skills

Minimum Experience:
One year of supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Assess students with speech or language disorders and determine eligibility for services.

2. Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech/language goals contained in Individual Educational Plans (IEP).

3. Participate in the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee regarding interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students with speech and/or language disorders according to district procedures.

4. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of therapy services.

5. Counsel and involve parents in the remedial process.

6. Complete Medicaid Forms and return to Special Populations PEIMS Clerk as indicated by the calendar.

7. Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom-based activities to improve oral and written language skills of students.

8. Provide staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel in the identification and understanding of students with communication deficits.

9. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required within timelines and due dates.

10. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.

11. Prepare and participate in the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee meetings.

12. After the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meeting will distribute modification sheets to the teachers who will be responsible for implementing the modifications, maintain students’ campus folder; and oversee the implementation of the IEP.

13. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of school district.

14. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.

15. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.

16. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the student.

17. Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.

18. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the speech therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.

19. Assist in the selection of materials, equipment and other instructional material.

20. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

21. Establish control and administer discipline according to board policies and administrative regulations.

22. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

23. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

24. Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of speech therapy to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.

25. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.

26. Proactively seeks parental support.

27. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or Principal.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to manage multiple priorities and to work at multiple sites.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Regular district-wide travel; may work at multiple sites; moderate lifting and carrying; pushing wheelchair; positioning students; may have biological exposure to communicable diseases.
