JOB TITLE: School Bus Driver
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Transportation
COMPENSATION PLAN: MT4
DEPT. /SCHOOL: Transportation

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned bus route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (class B) with school bus and passenger endorsement

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Must be 21 years of age
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Knowledge of student discipline procedure
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to operate bus
Acceptable driving record according to Texas Education Agency standards

EXPERIENCE:
Experience as a certified school bus driver preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

2. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing.

3. Maintain discipline on school buses and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.

4. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

5. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after operation and prepare work orders for needed repairs.

6. Perform thorough bus maintenance inspection and complete related paperwork as scheduled by department.

7. Communicate with school personnel and parents about student behavior while on the bus.

8. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

9. Operate two-way radio equipment with transportation office.

10. Follow proper procedures for reporting all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and complete required reports.

11. Drive bus for extracurricular activities as needed.

12. Be punctual and dependable in attendance.

13. Serve as role model for students.

14. Follow district policy concerning uniforms.

15. Comply with all state, district, and departmental regulations, policies and procedures.

16. Complete all staff development/training requirements.

17. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Operates school bus and two-way radio

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Maintain emotional control, ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain effective control over students.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Ability to operate motor vehicle/bus. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Subject to bus driving certification requirements including random alcohol and drug testing.
